MacPhail Gamelan Camp

 Once again, Joko Sutrisno will offer a one-week gamelan camp at the MacPhail Center for Music. Here’s the ideal opportunity for your child, age 8-12, to experience this fascinating and accessible form of group music making—no musical background needed. Instruments are provided. The dates are June 21-25, the time 9 AM-noon daily. The fee is $250. Lake Harriet Band Shell

 Sumunar has been invited to perform a concert once again at the beautiful Lake Harriet Bandshell in Minneapolis. This is the premier outdoor concert venue in the Twin Cities in a wonderful setting at the edge of Lake Harriet. The adult and youth gamelan groups together with the dance troupe will perform. Please join us for an outstanding cultural and artistic experience.

Sumunar at Como Lake Pavillion

  The gamelan and dance ensembles performs their annual Como Lake concert at the Pavilion in St. Paul. The scenic backdrop lends itself to the beautiful music and costumes, creating a feast for the eyes and ears. The covered performance area allows for concerts rain or shine. Both adult and youth gamelan ensembles will play in varying combinations. Please join us in this beautiful concert setting.

Pan Asian Dance Festival

 Sumunar Dance Ensemble performrd the courtly Surung Dhayung in this celebration of Asian dance.  Eight other Asian dance forms were also represented in the performance.  The festival also included face painting, Asian crafts, street art and lots of family fun. 

Festival runs from noon - 5 p.m

MacPhail Concert

 Sumunar Gamelan Ensemble presented a free concert at the MacPhail Center for Music in their International Music Series. The concert featured both the adult and youth gamelan players as well as the Sumunar dancers. It included two examples of Indonesian classical dance. Basic principles of gamelan musical structure were explained, questions were addressed, and after the program the audience was offered an opportunity for hands-on acquaintance with the gamelan instruments. It was an enjoyable evening in a comfortable, family setting.

Sumunar Dance Ensemble at Festival of Nations

Sumunar Dance Ensemble, with guest performers from the local Indonesian community, performed the Indang dance.  This lively and energetic dance comes from Sumatra and features unique clapping and percussion movements.

Rasinah: The Enchanted Mask: A fundraiser and film screening to benefit Sumunar.

 Sumunar, a community performance group showcasing Indonesian arts, presents a film screening and auction to raise funds for a study tour of Java Indonesia in July 2010.

Rasina: The Enchanted Mask, directed by Rhoda Grauer is a film documenting the rescue of a national treasure and dance from extinction. The screening will take place in conjunction with a live performance featureing Indonesian music and dance along with a silent auction.

Wirama Jawa: Java Beat : Sumunar Spring Performance & Reception

Sumunar presented Wirama Jawa: Java Beat, a family-friendly afternoon of music, dance and food.  Our annual spring concert featured a wide variety of Indonesian music and dance.  Plus, this year, we hosted a reception after the show to allow the audience to mix and mingle with the performers and sample delicious Indonesian appetizers.
